Demelza Campbell is the principal teacher and founder of Iyengar Yoga Dunedin.
Her yoga journey started in Palmerston North after having several surgeries. At the time she had a stressful corporate job with large responsibilities. Yoga was a form of healing post surgeries.
Demelza has a long term auto immune condition. This has given her first hand understanding of the importance of maintaining a consistent practice in order to be as well as possible. She understands the ebb and flow these conditions take. She always works to support herself and her students as they navigate their health conditions in there different phases.
Having never forgotten what it was like to be a raw beginner with an inherently stiff body that did not move, she has great compassion for those starting out on their yoga journey.
A fortuitous meeting with Kelly Sobanski pre-pandemic led to Demelza working with both Kelly and Lois Steinberg (both in the USA) as her teachers. This has deepened Demelza's practice and teaching and allowed her skill and knowledge to flourish.
Demelza has been selected for the past 3 years in Lois' International Therapy Intensive as a teacher working with students who have significant physical and medical issues in their bodies. Picture below is from 2024 Therapy Intensive with her teachers Kelly and Lois in the USA.
Demelza is the only Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher in Dunedin having passed International level exams to become certified.
Demelza has studied with the Iyengar family at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India.
Classes are taught with compassion, encouragement and are inclusive and supportive.
